About me

I was born in Liverpool and studied at the University of Kent at Canterbury (BA in Literature, MA in German).

In 1980 I moved to Berlin with the help of an Arts Council grant to conduct research at the Brecht Archives. I also started translating; the first film I worked on was Flußfahrt mit Huhn, 1984, directed by Arent Agthe.

I moved to Athens in 1987 and was appointed to teach literature at the American College of Greece - while getting more and more translating work.

I came to Prague in 1994; I'm still here. Alongside translation work, I also taught at Charles University and the Anglo-American University, but since 2005 I have focused solely on translating. I'm married with three children.
