About me

I was born in Liverpool and studied at the University of Kent (BA in Literature, MA in German).

After doing a wide variety of jobs, in 1980 I was awarded a grant from the UK Arts Council to conduct research in Berlin.

This resulted in my translation of Brecht’s novel The Business Affairs of Mr Julius Caesar, published by Bloomsbury in London, which is still the only English version of the work.

In 1981 I started translating for films in Berlin. One of the first projects I worked on was Kamikaze, starring Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

In 1987 I moved to Athens. Alongside translating, I taught in an American College and wrote textbooks for English language and literature.

I have been living in Prague for the last 30 years.

I am married, with three children.

For many years I also taught English language and literature, but I now work exclusively as a translator.

I travelled to Athens in 1987 and was appointed to teach literature at the American College of Greece there.

I came to Prague in 1994 and have been here ever since. I was initially teaching at Charles University, then at the Anglo-American University here . Since 2005 I have focused entirely on translating. I am married with three children.
